Why Bed Bugs Are a Growing Problem in Southern Utah

Bed bugs are not a sign of a dirty home — they are expert hitchhikers that travel from place to place in luggage, backpacks, purses, and secondhand furniture. They feed on human blood at night and spend the day hidden in mattress seams, box springs, headboards, and the tiny cracks around baseboards and outlets. A single fertilized female can start a new infestation, and populations grow quickly once they are established.

How to Tell If You Have Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are small — about the size and color of an apple seed when fully grown — and they are very good at staying hidden. Most people discover an infestation from the evidence it leaves behind rather than by seeing the bugs themselves. Here is what our technicians look for, and what you can check between visits:

Bites in lines or clusters are often the first clue. Bed bug bites typically appear on skin exposed during sleep — arms, shoulders, legs, and neck — and frequently show up in a row or tight group. Not everyone reacts to the bites, so their absence doesn't rule out an infestation.

Spots and stains on bedding are a reliable sign. Look for tiny rust-colored or dark spots (digested blood) along mattress seams, on sheets, and where the mattress meets the box spring, plus small smears on the headboard and nearby walls.

Shed skins and eggs accumulate where bed bugs harbor. As they grow, bed bugs molt and leave behind pale, translucent shells; the eggs are about a millimeter long and cream-colored, often tucked into cracks and seams.
